Right so i had fun aquaplaning today and smacked the car into a ditch. Car im fairly sure is a write off, so i am on the lookout for a new one

I was with a 00 Golf which I was doing the trick spacious enough, got decent mpg out of it even if it is old and petrol.

So not knowing a lot about cars I looking for what people would recommend. The upper limit might be 5k but 4k is probably more like it.

I have been recommended the Toyota Avensis on the grounds that it is bloody reliable and lots of them, and cheaper being an Asian manufacturer, down side it is a large 2.0 diesel .. which means moneys.

I was looking at the Ford Focus which is a 1.6D but not as reliable or as many around the town.

    Any other recommendations ??

Avensis is actually pretty nice place to be in. It's very roomy and the dash i quite pleasant to look at. There are few problems with that era of Avensis and they are not bullet proof as many Irish people like to believe. Do your homework properly - I'd start with Honest John.

Focus is a nice car too. Much smaller than Avensis though.
I believe that main problems with 1.6 diesel focus were DPF and DMF. Again, do your homework before buying one :)

The engine in your old Golf may be much in demand.

@aujopimur true the speed of this forum is mad though, must be the busiest.

@but43r honest John ? DPF ? DMF ? Im not on this board much and with the lingo.

@Henry Ford III well the insurance has brought it to a garage so I gather it is out of my hands , but I can see why it was a great car *sigh* good mpg and felt it could go for another 10 years easy. I wouldnt have the foggiest how to deal with selling for scrap or anything like that ... must by that bangernomics book.

www.honestjohn.co.uk is a website that gives reviews of cars and tells you the pros and cons of each car.

    DPF - diesel particulate filter

    DMF - dual mass flywheel
