Torque as a Dash Cam

Been wanting to get a dash cam for ages, had a few near misses and wanted the added benefit of having a video record of whatever happened, peoples memory gets very hazy a few days after a tip :)

So decided to try out Torque, since I wanted the scanning functionality anyway, why not combine the two.

Bought this off Amazon for 17 Bucks:

The Torque App turned out to be so good I bought that for 3.50 as well.

Using the Video Recorder plugin for it, you can set up different things you want to monitor.

When I head off in the morning to work I just turn it on and set off, it also records the GPS data along with the video too, which you can view as a faded overlay.

Niceeeee, I've been using Torque for a while now, great app, didn't realise it had a video recording function, gonna try this one out on the way home.

So you have that app on your phone and you just record driving along while gets data from the car's OBD2 port and GPS, speed from the phone itself?
Handy. Can you tell us more about the setup, phone, cradle etc?

It's a great app imo, got one of those bluetooth dongles aswell myself to use with it.

    Nice.

I've used Torque to track my route via GPS, but haven't used the separate "Track Recorder" app.

Although I wouldn't be too keen on recording huge video files on my phone.
Depending on the video resolution and the encoding method used, you could be talking anything from 700Mb to 2Gb per hour, eating up the phone battery too unless you've a USB charger from the cigarette socket.

    Using a Samsung Galaxy S+
Bought this mount for 7 euros ages ago:

Phone Slots perfectly into it, doesn't wobble around the place as I have it mounted pressed against the Dash.

Also have a Tunelink Bluetooth adapter, that has a USB Charging socket on it so provides power and can transmit over FM or just via the Aux in cable.

The phone is multipurpose, does my music, works as a Sat Nav, a Safety Camera detector and a Dash cam, pretty tidy with only one wire for charging if needed and everything else is bluetooth.

I'm using the FM Transmitter, which I must say is excellent, have driven from The Netherlands to Berlin and from NL to the west of the UK without any interference. Only option for me, Volvos are tricky for setting up an Aux in. Theres a way to directly solder one into the AMP in the boot but I can't be arsed risking it.

I leave the OBD Adapter plugged into the the socket, the phone just pairs up everything when I get in, music starts playing where it left off and I just launch Torque and set it recording.

1hr 12minutes took 520MB, not too bad, I have 4 GB Internal and a 16gb external card I picked up for 18. The idea is only to keep a few days and delete old ones, Its only to have a record in the event of a tip :)

Thats my Neighbours pug, I've never bumped it, although the thing is so banjaxed he probably wouldn't notice if you went at it with a sledge hammer. :pac::pac::pac::pac:

    *edit*

Just realised what the Youtube "Do you want to fix your bumpy video" option does, it moves the screen around in time with the bumps which you can notice with the clocks moving around at the top of the video.

Use torque myself. Great app. Love the realtime info and tracking :)
Never knew about the video plugin though

    guys

    thats nifty work.

i got a htc one x and the htc car cradle (power from ciggie).

if i get the torque app can i run this in the background? as i would want my phone in 'car mode' so i can use tune in and access my music.

i have a x link unit also i need to install on my accord but have not go around to it.
