I want to apply by Post, but not if have to send my passport through the post. Do they except photocopies or do you have to send them this and hope that it doesn't get lost?

Can anyone confirm who has applied by post?

    Thanks

I recently sent off to get a replacement permit from Dublin City motor tax office in smithfield and sent a photocopy of my passport and there was no problem with it. It took at least a week to come in the post though.

That's beacause it was a replacement. They only need your passport once I believe.

When I applied for my learner permit, they asked for my passport. When I applied for my driving license, I wasn't asked for it. I assumed that this was because they already had it on file.

So I'd be iffy about whether a photocopy would suffice. Just give your local Motor Tax Office a call? And you can check the application form - see if it says "original passport", etc.

You could be right there acutually, although the DCC website here says original, and they did accept a photocopy. I just didn't really want to send my passport away in the post as it might not arrive on the other side.

See that's what I mean. I did have a feeling an original is what was required.

My point is that maybe you didn't actually need to send on ID, since they had it on file already, and that you would've gotten your license even without a photocopy?

Yeah, I'd NEVER send such an important document in the post. I almost had to with the fact that the opening times are awful, 9-4 , and they don't open on a Saturday...

That brings me to my next point, I got someone else to go in (when applying for the Learner Permit) with all of my documents (including passport) and it was accepted no problem. So hopefully you've that option if you can't visit during opening hours. :)

Go with a birth cert. you can't go wrong (unless you can't find it!)
