Would i be right is assuming white transit gatso vans with no markings are soley used for statistical purposes only and not for gatering speed data to be used for issuing fines etc.

Unmarked are generally garda vans and can set up anywhere to detect speeding and issue fines, marked gosafe vans can only set up in specified locations to do the same. Traffic survey vehicles are usually marked as such.

Van was transit with no markings or garda logos defo had camera in rear driver side window, didnt see flash and thought all white gatso vans with "NO" markings could only be used soley for statistical purposes only, was doing 90 in 80 zone.

Like shooting fish in a barrel, van was parked at end of straight stretch of road with very slight sweeping bend, might be saved by fellow unfortunate motorist who was driving in front of me.

The only way to be completely sure if it was a Garda van is to think back op.

Was the van on a completely safe stretch of road where the last accident was years ago?

Should this stretch of road have a higher speed limit?

Was it a twisty dangerous stretch of road where 90 kmh could endanger lives and should have a high profile anti speeding campaign to target the 5% of people who do speed on it?

If the first two answers were yes and the third no it was almost certainly an unmarked Garda van.

Van was parked at very slight sweeping bend with straight streches of road at each end, defo will appeal if i get notice.

(I don't want to sound like I'm on a high horse here because, I'm not)
    Appeal on what grounds?
The unmarked van didn't make you speed. I think appealing it by going to court is just asking for some bonus (penalty) points!

Agree 100% with kbannon here if the speed limit is eighty there is no grounds for appeal whatsoever.

It doesn't make being screwed any easier to take though.

Possibly make appeal on grounds van was located on safe stretch of road with no entrances-junctions nearby, about time motorists make a stand and put an end to shoot fish in barrel revenue generating policy, have no problem with vans placed in dangerous or buit up areas close to schools-shops- towns etc.

That'll be 4 points and a nice fine for you then. Completely agree with you on the above but head->wall->bang->repeat comes to mind.

Well, then get ready to spend a day sitting around the court and when the judge asks if you were speeding in an 80 zone (he won't care about anything else), you will admit to it and then he/she will give you a fine and four points.
No point appealing as you have absolutely no grounds to do so.

It's a crap feeling being caught, but if ya get the notice, take the fine and do the time. :)

If people didnt speed on that stretch of road they wouldnt site the vans there. Sorry to state the obvious

You could try appealing to the local authority that the limit should be reviewed/changed going forward but I don't think there's any process for you to appeal a speeding fine on grounds like the ones you suggested. Rightly or wrongly, the posted limit is there and you're supposed obey it, even if it's daft.

Garda van can set up anywhere, its the go safe vans that are supposed to be at blackspots.
