Culling of stickies and general forum housekeeping

Currently we have 11 stickied threads on this forum, more than any other forum I'm aware of and quite a bit higher than the site wide recommendation. It's also makes browsing on a mobile device a pain.

    1. Could I suggest that the 'Saorview guide' be merged with the 'FAQ' - maybe with an updated titles e.g. 'Saorview and Terrestrial FAQ'.

    2. The 'Saorview rep thread' is pointless and can be deleted/unstickied.

    3. The 'Important Notice' to installers can be incorporated into the forum rules.

    4. Are the 'Dab in Ireland' and 'Saorview speculation' threads really of such importance that they need to be stickied?

    5. As the Satellite forum specifially mentions Sky (a commercial service) in the subheading ('All about the Sky Digital platform and other satellite systems targeted towards Ireland') then surely Saorview should be mentioned in the Terrestrial subheading? For the ordinary Joe Soap, he might not make the link between the two.

The current subheading is "All about TV through your aerial, including DTT, deflectors, and analogue reception."

Deflectors are on the way out, as arguably is analogue, so perhaps a rename to "All about TV/radio through your aerial including Saorview and Freeview."

Or better still rename the forum as 'Terrestrial and Saorview'.

    5. Similarly, the Satellite forum description should include a mention of Saorsat.

    6. The ICDG forum still lingers on as a dumping ground for people who don't know whether to post in Satellite or Terrestrial. They may or may not get a reply, depending on whose browsing it - can it be deleted and put out of its misery?

    Thanks!

Well said Apogee. Many people can't spell terrestrial, let alone know what it means. You only have to look at the number of people asking SaorView questions on the satellite forum to see how many are confused by the wording. Tidying up the stickies and titles is a good idea IMO.

Indeed, times I have absent mindedly decided to cull some stickies. Old habits die hard.

I think that the biggest problem with Stickies is that they generally tend to be ignored anyway. Even by newbies.

Some sort of "super sticky" like Motors have for example would be handy, though can be time consuming to get it right.

That's why we put the sticky stuff into Bytelive wiki and then moved it to techtir

Links to saorview.ie, mpeg4ireland and soartv.info would be be more use than some of the stickies now.

I've performed a little spring cleaning. Let me know if you're happy or not!

    Looks good :)

Perhaps a new thread could be created regarding combo boxes, because the current original post is a little out of date. The first post could also just be updated.

It might be no harm for a sticky about NI switchover issues too.

I have promised to do it for ages... I agree there are loads of new boxes.

As a general rule for unstickying (sp?) threads, it's best to bump them once so that when they are no longer stickied they still appear on the first page, rather than instantly disappearing from sight. If they have any relevance people will still post to them otherwise they will naturally fall away with other threads.

    ......Just a personal preference. :)

It's a bit disappointing that the DAB thread is gone. With the ongoing commercial trial in the South East and the impending new commercial trial in Dublin in less than 2 weeks the information within this thread would be useful in my opinion, both for answering questions that people may have and to promote awareness of the trials.

    Thanks marc - much appreciated!

I reckon there is still some room for improvement. For example, the forums rules thread might be retitled to "Forum rules and Notice to Installers" - the info regarding the private forum could then be added permanently to the forum rules. And the *Imporant Notice* thread could be unstickied - it's a confusing mess to be honest.

I reckon the Saorview Guide and FAQ could be easily merged too?

I think there is also some merit to a link under 'Cable & Digital TV' to the installers private forum as mention by scaller in this thread:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=79241912

Finally, the ICDG forum is still getting new orphan threads - can we *please* remove it?

    Thanks again.
