I'm trying to decide between getting a macbook air or macbook pro 13inch. i'm using an old macbook white - nearly 5 years old.

My own machine is sluggish and is not able to cope anymore with day-to-day tasks.

I'm wondering if anyone is using an air as their main machine for photo processing.

It has to be an apple machine because I'm using Aperture3

I have and use the 13" inch Macbook Pro, and i find it great. Loads of memory to hold everything, screen size is grand for viewing pics, and processes well. Should be able to hand most post processing, I'm afraid I've no idea about the Air.

I've probably the same 5 year old white macbook (1GB RAM, 2.16ghz, 13"). I bought 4GB RAM for it about 3.5 years ago (2x 2GB slots) and swapped it out in 2 mins abd cost about €60-80 at the time?

Apple states it will support only 2GB but in reality it support 3.33GB RAM. I originally had a 120GB HDD but swapped that out for a 500GB HDD (which I think was a bit crap as since then its been marginally slower). Mine is 5 years in August this year and STILL runs faster than any windows PC or laptop I've used/encountered in that time.

My new Toshiba work laptop I got 12 months ago is about 5 times slower straight out of the box than my (then) 4 year old macbook.

So maybe upgrade your RAM for a cheap fix and get some more life from it.

I want to get a new macbook but can't justify it because my whitemacbook does everything I need from it. OSX 10.4 Tiger isn't supported any more but its no big deal. CS3 works fine on it and is more than I need.

Macbook air isn't the way I'd go tbh. They are nice, light, small and powerful but impractical in my world. 13" MB pro isn't that much bigger, little price difference and has more accessibility all round with ports, drives etc... wait until July before buying though. New Apple upgradesand free upgrade to OSX Mountain Lion too. So hang on if your keen.

I've a 15" macbook pro and love it. It is just perfect for my photography processing needs. Much faster than my PC laptop, which is a fairly similar spec.

Yeah, Apple are more expensive, but the quality is there.

I'm glad to hear that someone else is running the same type of machine as myself. I thought I was the only one

I'm running 4GB on my machine at the moment, but I stupidly upgraded to OSX Lion and that has been it's downfall I reckon.

I'm in a fortunate position where I can get a new mac at a very good price but I might hang on a bit longer and save for a 15 inch. I reckon it'll be good in the long run
