    Hi

Hope this is in the right forum!

Basically I am looking for advice / someone who has been in this position before...

I am recently finished college. Will graduate in October with a Bachelors in Marketing. I (somewhat) enjoyed my course too...but herein lies my problem.

I don't want to work in the field that I will soon be qualified in. I know I'm going to get a lot of "well why did you do the course then???" but I was 18, and didn't have a CLUE (or a good LC - got 240 points) what I wanted to do.

And quite frankly I still don't.

I have worked in retail part-time for pretty much my whole college career, and I really enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the hours (i.e. only having Christmas Day off).

I have recently interviewed for a telesales job. Not tooting my own horn here, but I have a fair chance of getting it. The pay is crap and I'd be stuck in an office 8 hours a day. I so badly do not want to work in an office.

So basically I'm at a cross roads. I don't want to be stuck in a job that I know I'll be unhappy in.

    So.....any advice?

Most of us end up in jobs we don't enjoy. There are only so many professional footballers and film directors to go around. The sooner you accept that work is just one relatively small section of your life the happier you'll be.

Would you be happy to work in retail until you can figure out what you want to do?

I think I would yes.... Not sure. I wouldn't mind doing something with computers... But that wud involve another 3 years (at least) of studying!

Best advice I can give you is not to worry and to figure out what it is you want to do in your own time. In the meantime, save some money to cover yourself if you decide to go back to college and do a masters to convert to your chosen career.

For computers, there are conversion courses lasting a year for graduates which would give a starting point on the IT ladder. However these would be office jobs with 8 hrs being the minimum per day, at least starting out.

if you want good marketing information there is a very good source of it. there is a senior lecturer From university of limerick called John fahy. he has a website so it is public information, but he goes into things about how marketing can be used in many different facets of life, not just the selling of stuff to someone. you should check it out as it shows how broad marketing can really be.
