I see it is 39 euro online but I cannot prucahse online.

Is the station a lot more expensive?

Buying in advance on-line is generally cheaper. You (or someone willing to let you use theirs) need an email address and either a debit or credit card. You can also phone them at the number listed on the page below.

There is no discount if you buy in advance at the station.

The fares at the station are listed here: http://www.irishrail.ie/index.jsp?p=118&n=197&a=266#Dublin%20Heuston%20-%20Limerick%20Fare%20Grid

Adult Single €50.00 (there may be a discount on that on certain days of travel)
    Adult Day Return €54.00
    Adult Open Return €63.00

    Not always.

    Newbridge - Thomastown last week.

Online fare was €14.99 each way plus €2.00 booking fee - a total of €31.98.

Fare grid price was €26.50 (open return) and that's what I paid when I bought my ticket at the station.
