The warning light has just come on for the engine oil.

I'm in the sticks at the moment so just wondering if there are alternative engine oils that I can get as I'm not sure if there is a Halfords etc around so might not be able to get the manufacturer recommended?
(presuming that the manufacturer recommended oil is best)

How far can I drive with this warning light on?

General suggestion as opposed to your specific vehicle - stop driving now and check level when cold (give it 30 mins or more to cool). Pull dipstick out, wipe, put it back in and pull out again. Is there anyoil at all on the stick?

    Find your oil here http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English-LCW/carengineoils_which-oil.aspx

If they don't have your oil in the local garage, then any oil is better than no oil. Get the oil closest to your spec and changed all oil as soon as you have the right stuff handy.

I may be wrong but I don't think the e90 has a dipstick or some don't at least.

Ah you're right. It's the electronic "stick" on those.

wouldnt advise driving too much if the light has come on. is it yellow / red?

recently had that, and added 1L 5w30 generic brand, working fine since.
