    Hi guys,

I'm just wondering what books are studied by photography students in the first year as I'm involved with a course up the country and students would like some info. Also, do photography students also share classes with visual communication students?

    Thanks!!

In first year the main book we read for Visual Studies was Roland Barthes Image, Music, Text but only the chapters The Photographic Message & The Rhetoric of the Image. I would definitely recommend getting a head start on those two before starting 1st year.
    Essential Reading are:
Image, Music, Text as mentioned above!
Mythologies by Roland Barthes (I never read this)
Photography (Key Concepts) by David Bate.
Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices by Stuart Hall.

    Supplemental Reading:
The Photography Reader By Liz Wells.
    Photography by Stephen Bull.

We don't share classes with Vis Com, in Temple Bar its just us photography students :D
