Renault will charge a fortune to repair or replace.

Try http://www.autokey.ie. Some on here have used them to good effect

It seems to be fairly common - either the microswitches themselves in the card fail, or the solder joints fail. Can't recall which it is. If you know someone handy with a soldering iron they could be able to sort you out. I'm sure there's a DIY guide out there somewhere.

not what you want to hear but buying a 2001 laguna with a key card was as good as throwing money down the drain.

does anyone read up stuff before buying cars

There's a key contained in the card. The lock is under a piece of plastic on the passenger side door handle.

I have a similar problem where the keycard will only open the doors but not lock them. To lock the doors you have to close the front doors, then go in through the back door and press the lock button between the two front seats. Exit out through the back door and all the doors should be locked :)

I love it. You write off Renault based on an 11 year old car you bought for what...a grand?

id write off renault due to my bad experiences with it, same as if i had a bad experience with service in a restaurant, i wouldnt be inclined to go back....

and this is before i have to exit through the back door...? :(

There's two back doors or two rear passenger doors. I'm not sure what ye call them, I'm no car expert. When you lock the car manually with the button in between the two front seats, the two front doors must be closed. Therefore to lock the car you must get out of the drivers seat, close the drivers door, open one of the back doors, go into the back seat, stretch your hand in between the two front seats and press the lock button, get out of the car through the door you entered i.e. the back door and then close that door. The car should now be locked :)

Cleaning the throttle body is a simple job that can be done at home.

Any car car have a gearbox leak, it's certainly not only on Renaults. The previous owner may have ragged the **** out of it, maybe someone changed the oil and rung the sump nut? Theres lots of reasons it could be leaking. It was probably leaking and the previous owner or garage most likely cleaned it up to get it sold. Cars can be cleaned up quite well for a sale and peopel not checking everythign can be caught out. Did the OP get a service history? Who knows what work it has or hasnt had done without one? Plenty of people like to ignore the "or 12/18 months, whichever comes first" part of the service shedule and just go "sure I've had it 4 years but it's only done 8,000 miles, what would I need to be changing the oil for"

The keycards have been known to be a weak point but a few I've encountered have come from people not looking after them, putting them in their back pockets and sitting on them etc. Theres plenty of places that will fix them for around €30-40. We dont even know if it's just a broken button or not. It's not unknown for people to think mashign the buttons really hard when the battery is wasting is a better idea to get the last few goes out, then just changing the battery.

An Accord costs a good bit more than most of the cars in the class of the laguna new too.
