Recommend a sander

I have a timber gate that needs sanding. Its about 10ft wide by 6ft high.
each year it has gotten a light sanding before being painted.
Its gotten to a state where more of the varnish has come off in certain places than others over the years so its very patchy, so I want to sand it down completely to get a completely fresh surface to paint.

So just wondering what is the best model of sander to look at purchasing to do the job? It will probably get occasional use besides doing a few windows and things.

Belt sanders are generally quicker, orbital sanders can produce a finer finish.
You are less likely to have a dig in with an orbital sander, but the discs wear out more quickly and that can get expensive.
A belt sander would be the most useful imo.
