Is there any way to read/copy the contents of /proc/$pid/ without root access? I dotn want to change it in any way or write anything into a process, I just want to take an image of what a particular process is doing at a point in time.

    aaaand related:

can GDB be run without being installed on the local system? From a mapped network drive? or from USB storage or a CD ?

If you started the application, you should be able to see under /proc/$pid. I can see more or less anything though. I'm using mint (whatever the latest version is, 13 I think). It's an ubuntu derivative.

Once it is the right architecture, has permissions (shouldn't be an issue unless there's some UID malarkey), access to the relevant libraries and those libraries are in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH then you should be good to go.
