You will get 30 days at the border in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. I think most cost about $20 (give or take a few bribes)
You need to get your Vietnam Visa in advance....its easiest and quickest to get it in Cambodia...I got mine in a day in Phnom Penh

we're going there in September. Here's the info I have:

Thailand - free visa on arrival if you're not staying >30 days (15 if entering by land), but you must enter with 10,000baht on you or equivalent.
Cambodia - e-visa costs $25 and is e-mailed to you, takes 3 business days to process, and valid for 3 months from date of issue, requires a digital photo. Valid for airport entry and some land crossings, but not all, so do check.
Laos - visa on arrival if you're not staying >30 days costs $30||$35 (depending on citizenship/passport) and requires 2-3 photos, available at airports and most border points (check your crossing destination though). Plus a $1 overtime fee for out of hours arrivals and possibly a 2500 Kip (~25cent) entry fee.
Vietnam - visa is required before arrival. The embassy says that it's the only source of visas, but have come across numerous blogs/forums where travellers booked through a visa service agency and it cost them $10 or $20 and takes 2-3 business days. There's an arrival stamping fee on arrival of $25 on top of the visa and 2 photos are required.

hmm.... then defo double check your crossing points for the visas.

    Cambodian e-visas:

    Lao visa on arrival:

    Vietnam visas:

I am by no means encouraging use of non-direct/non-embassy visas nor endorsing those website. So use at your own risk. I plan on using www.vietnamvisapro.com, I'll probably look for some more feedback on that before applying though.

Thanks! What happens if you just arrive at the border with just your passport?!

Just turn up at all your border crossings with your passport, 25-30 dollars and two passport photos and you will be fine. I find it highly unlikely you will be crossing any very remote border where this wont work.
For Vietnam of course but just pick up your visa for that in Bangkok or Vientiene, it maybe 40 dollars takes 1-2 days, all of the hundreds of travel agents that are around provide this service.
Just be careful when crossing back into Thailand by land as you will only get 15 days.

oh, looks like the Vietnam visa on arrival is only valid for airport landings:

if you're going over land, then you'll probably need to get the standard tourist visa from their embassy. I think nearest one is London.

The nearest one to Vietnam is Laos/Cambodia.. If you get it in London, you have to give the dates before you even go to Asia which leaves no room for plan changes.

Hey, I'm in the same situation being confused about visas! I'm going to Thailand for 46 days altogether, but I plan on going to Cambodia too for a while (probably around the 30 day mark to renew the visa?!)

Slightly confused, can I get visa on landing in Thailand, or sort it out before I go here. Probably would need a double entry one!? Then I presume just a visa on the border of Cambodia?

    Any help please :)

You get a stamp at the airport in Thailand that allows you thirty days, it's free. When you go to cambodia, you need to get a visa at the border, it costs about $20 plus a bribe for the border official!

When you come back to Thailand you will get another stamp that allows you 15 days if your coming over by land or 30 again if coming by air!

    Hope that helps :)
