Lake Garda has two very distinct halves, the top half has the more stunning mountainous scenery, but it is more remote and has less transfer options. The southern half of the lake is flatter and wider and has better transport links to the airports, other towns etc. If you are relying on public transport then somewhere on the Southern part of the lake would probably suit you better. Towns like Garda, Sirmione, Lazise, Bardolino would all fit the bill for you? Are you flying into Verona?

I haven’t stayed in the South of the lake, so can’t recommend any particular hotels. However most of them will have pools. Be warned that the hotels are very expensive in Lake Garda in July/August. If I were you, I would have a look at the various towns and see which appeals to you and have a look at the hotels on Trip Advisor.
