Right click on the bar>Task bars>Tick Quick Launch, they should re appear. You can drag the items to re order. If Windows 7 just open the program, right click on the icon and choose "pin to taskbar"

Sounds like you want to see them in the notification area.
If you right click on the taskbar, select properties and click the customise button in the notifications section, you should be able to choose which icons you see there

Have you tried a reboot? Sometimes when explorer crashes and restarts some icons fail to re appear

Did you try just dragging the icons from the desktop to where you want them? What operating system is it?

Reboot just means shutdown and restart your pc.

Restart the computer, or shut it down, start it up again. How do you connect to the net? Ethernet cable, Wifi, Dongle etc.?

Have you tried restarting the computer? If you have restarted you can download a FixIt tool here which may work

Click the arrow pointing upwards in the bottom right corner, click customise, then find the icons you want and change the dropdown menu option to "Show icons and notifications".

In that case it's def the notifications you want to look at.
Do as I suggested before and when you click the "customize" button, is there an option to "Turn system icons on and off" This is where you can switch on/off the network, power, volume icons etc. If they're not ON here then I don't think it matters what the setting is on the previous page
    Hope this works
