Does anyone have any info regarding a beginners running club for cork for men and women?

I used to play hurling and I would like to keep fit or improve my fitness.

To be honest there is a good choice of clubs in Cork with Eagle, St Finbarrs and Leevale. Those involved in those clubs are on here so they each will try to recruit you. What made me decided (only going to first training session latter this week) is age of runners similar to myself. Whatever distance you are interested in look on cork running blog for results and see what club is dominant in that distance and are the ages similar to yourself. Personally I'd like to train with some people of my own age. Like I don't want to be the youngest or the oldest there if you know what I mean. Its also important to select a club that there are people down the list on the results also so you can see that it caters for all abilities as if it didn't they wouldn't stay with the club. If you are outside the city there are more clubs. I could be missing some in the city too. There is a listing here on some other thread. But its important to have people better than you also to help you improve too. Or if you know people at a club just ask them too.

Cork County Board web site is not the best but some contact info at
    http://www.corkathletics.org/Clubs.htm

I would expect all clubs would welcome a beginner.
Some of the clubs would have Fit4Life groups also which would include runners of all abilities.
Checking the results for recent road races isn't a bad idea, but bear in mind alot of clubs would have runners who train but don't compete (at least not frequently), so the slowest runner from a club in the results might not be the slowest at training. So don't let fast times in a race put you off from enquiring further.

    Best of luck.

Homer where exactly are you based? Cork city or County? West or East? that will help suggest a club for you.

best bet is to join a club like the mentioned because even if you join a beginners club/group you will have to leave after a few months/year when your not a beginner anymore and want to progress.

most clubs cater to all standards.....beginner clubs/groups are limiting if you want to progress.

    hi homer

i'm in a similar position to you . i live in douglas and would like to do a bit more running. Can do about 5 miles in under 45min normally just training away. Would love to aim for a 7min pace over 5 mile. Why are you joining a running club? What do you think are the benefits?

i only ask this because the thought had crossed my mind to join a club

I am joining a club as I have been playing team sports all my life and find it much easier to run with people than on my own as a little company breeds more competition and it can drive me on at first. I have had to train on my own before as I was playing hurling in Kilkenny and living in Cork, I just need some help at the start of my running training to help me really get into it.

There is a (free) Women's Meet & Train group, organised by Eagle AC, in Douglas - 7pm, Mondays.
St Finbarr's AC and Ballincollig AC both have Fit4Life groups.
