Ok lads/ ladies, sorry for the vagueness o this thread, but I'm nowhere near the car in question.

The sister just rang me to say her car just died about 200 yards from her driveway. First thing I it her to check was the timing belt, and it seems to be alright. So I got her to try starting it again.

When she turns the ignition, nothing doing. From what I could hear at the other end of the phone, the car was trying to crank, but wasn't starting. Lights and radio working fine.

    It's a 08 1.2 Clio.

I know I'm scant I details here, but any ideas? Apart from getting it to a good mechanic?

I presume she checked for fuel? Did she recently refuel with either dodgy fuel or the wrong fuel?

That was te second question I asked her. There's a half a tank in the car, and she only goes to Topaz.

As a slight update, she wasnt 200 yards up the road. She was reversing out of the drive, when the car conked out. And apparently you can't see the timing belt straight off on the car, so she may have been looking at the aux. belt.

I know the car is 4 years old, with 74,000 ish kms on it. My initial thought is the belt has snapped/ slipped/ tensioner gone. Does anybody know of any other issues with these? Apart from being a Renault!!! ;)

Could a mod please change the thread title to 08 Clio just died/ won't restart.
You can actually do that yourself, hit edit and then 'go advanced'.

Stuck in Belfas, with only the phone with me. I know I could go to the full site, but it's effort!!! And it's been a long two days so far!

Did she describe any sounds or other issues before it cut out, any lights on the dash etc?

    Is it petrol or diesel?

I'd say 1st problem is immobiliser Try second key
    2nd problem it's a Renault
    And 3rd problem it's a Renault :D

I've seen the K12 Micra(many of the same mechanicals) suffer corrosion of the fused links on the positive battery connection, causing sudden loss of all power to some of the engine electrics. I'm not certain if the Clio 3 uses the same connection as the Micra though.

Agree completely with the Renault issues. Turns out the problem was a bad connection on the fuel pump. Nothing too major. Until it gives up the ghost completely, and has to replace it.

But thanks to all for the replies.

had the same problem myself....most likely battery or fuel lines. does her radio work? if so its not the battery. check the fuel pump next to the engine. if thats deflated means the fuel aint getting up to the engine. good luck!

Teas the fuel pump alright. Bad connection, so wasn't drawing fuel.
