Vue and the Savoy have the largest screens. I haven't been to the Savoy in a while, but I regularly go to Vue and have no complaints about their 2D screenings. Sound is good and loud and the theatres are sound proofed so you don't have to worry about leakage from the film next door. The Sony 4K digital projectors (versus the mostly 2K projectors elsewhere) make for a fantastic image, but possibly a little on the dark side.

I haven't had a chance to check out iSense yet, but there's been some criticism of the seating layout: heads blocking the screen, etc.

We have cinemas outside of Dublin too you know :p

(I could only add my local one which I know is not the best, only the best around here, so I won't bother mentioning it)

Lighthouse are playing it as far as I know, lovely cinema.

I would say the one in Arklow is better than some of those you have listed. Your title should be best in Dublin.

In Cork - Mahon Point Omniplex. Seriously, that place is like paradise compared to the rest of them

Me, I like it because I have unlimited cinema for €20 per month, and because it has a large amount of screens theres a large amount of showings. The actual cinema isn't great but it has its pros.

Also, I haven't been to Odeon Point Village for iSense so I can't comment, but I prefer Cineworld to the rest of the cinemas mentioned. Omniplex Wexford is quite good, good picture, sound, comfy seats.

Yeah I know these are all Dublin but they are the main ones I am aware of, I posted it to find out what else is out there...
Also my main goal is to find a cinema in Ireland that is worth watching TDKR on..

I enjoyed watching King Kong in Cineworld's screen 1 a few years ago, it was awesome.

Is screen 1 one of the really tiny screens? They're gas.

Visually I'd say Vue is probably my favourite, but it's a total rip off. Great sound system as well. Cineworld's ok but there's nothing setting them apart from the other cnemas in the city and again it's a complete rip off if you don't have an Unlimited card . I love The Screen for atmosphere, ticket prices and the lack of undesireables, and The Savoy has a giant-ass screen.

For TDKR I'm going to Vue I reckon, I want to see it on a monster screen with great sound and be totally immersed. Generally speaking though screen size doesn't really factor into my decision.

I guess you mean 'biggest' by best? Savoy 1 is probably a good choice in that case - still the only cinema in town that has that old school theatre feel. Cineworld 17 only suffers for comparative soullessness.

I'm tempted to pick the Lighthouse though, as not only do they have the best seats around, it's also easily the nicest and most distinct cinema architecturally. I haven't been down since the reopening (it's just that tiny little bit out of the way in comparison to the city centre screens) but the tech was always excellent. May be my TDKR choice, actually, if they are indeed showing it.

Cineworld is expensive but when I was in college it was not too bad. I think Tuesday or Wednesday they do cheaper tickets.
Is the largest screen in Cineworld screen 1 or 17 ?

    17.

I go to Vue because its closest to my home, screens are fine, but the place is always filthy. I've had no cup holders on my seat more than once, and a couple of times the seat was detached from the floor.

I'd forgotten about the lighthouse actually, lovely cinema. And they are showing TDKR, although I think that will be my first trip to Odeon for the iSense.

I wonder would there ever be a market for a classically styled cinema, instead of soulless multiplexes that all look the same. something with a balcony, art deco look inside. If I ever won the lotto I'd invest in building one, make a cinema for cinema lovers, something like the Alamo Drafthouse.

I really don't like the seats in there! I felt like I had to hold myself up because they lent back too far and the back was touching the knees of the person behind me! Very nice place, though.

I actually quite like screen 1 in imc dun laoghaire. I watched the lotr trilogys there and the dark knight and loved it. There was a great cinema I went to in Galway just outside the city centre this year. anyone know the name it's beside an elverys sports shop ?

    That's the Omniplex.

The poll is completely ridiculous. It says "in Ireland", yet none of those are really outside of Dublin.

My personal choice goes to the Eye Cinema in Galway, which actually did win a poll about 3 years ago and was voted as the best one in Ireland.

Can a few be added to the poll please?
Like the Lighthouse, IFI, Screen (luv it!) and a few outside Dublin that might stand out.

I normally go to UCI/Odeon in Newbridge and visit the Savoy a lot too but the best movie experience I've had in the last 5 years would have to be seeing Avatar in the Eye Cinema in Galway.

Lovely tidy cinema, sound and clarity of picture was something to behold.

You reckon? I hate that cinema, its always noisy, I've never been to a film there where there wasn't a bunch of kids wrecking everyones head.

You can't really hold that against the cinema who attends it. I always go there late at night so there's never too many noisy kids around. But overall, they've nice big screens, good friendly staff and the food there is really good too!

How big are the screens in Coolock? Bigger than Savoy and Vue?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 25,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Loughc

Bigger than the ones in Savoy anyway, I've never been to Vue so I can't comment! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,836 ✭✭✭Sir Gallagher

The problem with the likes of Vue is, it does be full of little toerags and they don't have much of a selection. I like Cineworld, less toeraggy and decent range of films showing.

I know the poll doesnt include any outside Dublin, mainly cause I didnt know any but if you can tell me how to add some to the pole I will but I dont think there is a way to edit it

Not being rude but it seems a bit silly to create a poll for "best cinema in Ireland" without checking out what other cinemas there are in the rest of the country. I'm pretty sure this can be found easily enough through Google.

Not to getting into a keyboard battle here but I did say in my first comment " I cant get IMAX what is the best thing to settle for in Ireland?"

I asked for people to include in the comments cinemas that werent included in the poll. If I could easily find the best cinemas around Ireland on Google then I wouldn't have bothered to set up this thread. The poll was simply meant as a conversation starter...

I think Cineworld gets a bad rep on this forum. It shows a very good variety of films from hyped up blockbusters to more indie fare. It can side with the blockbusters (particularly when there is an 'event' movie on) quite a bit, but that's business. I think they tow the line quite well. IMO they are an excellent model on how to run a profitable business while not neglecting smaller films. Plus the monthly card is a stroke of genius which i am very thankful for. Since getting it I have seen many films which i doubt I'd have seen otherwise.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,020 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I think Cineworld's variety is a very specific kind of 'variety' though: usually only the most high-profile 'independent' films (Moonrise Kingdom and Cosmopolis at the moment, for example, which are easily sellable thanks to star presence), and only the most widely accessible foreign language films (The Raid, 13 Assassins etc...: not to hate on these superb films, but you can always tell the ones Cineworld are going to show). I guess you can't blame them from a business perspective for being risk averse, but with so much space I'd like to see them give a screen or even a night or two a month over to much more unusual fare. Especially when they seem to show so many Bollywood films: surely there's just as much demand for arthouse cinema?

I don't want to crap on the cinema too much, as in many ways they are certainly a better cinema than other multiplexes. Technically, at the very least, it's excellent: bar the handful of theatres where the screen just sort of 'hangs' in the air, if that makes sense - found it very distracting when I saw Jeff, Who Lives at Home there. And as I've said before, there have been a handful of times when Cineworld is actually the only place showing a film: Snowtown and The Chaser are two I recall. They do show the very, very occasional curveball: wasn't Charlie Casanova there recently?

But I think standard tickets way too expensive for what it is, and I can't justify the Unlimited Card as I only go there once or twice a month, compared to five or six times in the IFI. And if a film was showing in Cineworld and the IFI, I'd usually pick the latter. The Lighthouse is all-in-all a much nicer designed cinema, and at least has a bit of character to it.

There's the iSense over at the Point Village. Probably closest thing, but have heard a lot of bad things about it....

Cineworld screen 17 will do me lovely.

I'd go with iSense in Blanch.

Right, since this film seems to be stirring up a very unusual amount of threads about where to watch it (although perhaps proof that people don't go to the cinema nearly enough these days), here's a megathread. Anyone who asks the question elsewhere will be mocked mercilessly.

I'll leave the IMAX thread separate for now because it's a little different.

I'll be going to see it in Wexford. Can't wait.

I demanded the poll gets updated with Eye in Wellpark.
Or poll is renamed to "in the pale" :D

Sorry but im not entering a spoilery thread

Right so I'm going to go to Dkr on Monday in Dublin
    ( I live in mayo )
I'm going specially so where should I see it
I've heard bad things about sound and brightness and contrast etc so where should I see it

Also if I wanted to see it ( for example in the savoy 1) how do I know when it's in screen 1 It used to be in the evening press but that's not how things are anymore

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,464 ✭✭✭e_e

Go onto the Savoy's website and you'll find out which screens it's playing in.

Also if you want an experience different to the typical multiplexes I'd recommend seeing it in The Lighthouse cinema in Smithfield. Lovely place.

Click on the time you want, select tickets and go to "confirm" and you'll see where it's playing.
