i just failed my NCT on high emissions and was wondering whether it would be worth my while keeping it and try to fix it or to get rid and buy something else. i have a 01 ford focus.

Low idle: CO 4.94 vol%- above 0.50% is a fail
    HC 1,006ppm- above 0ppm is a fail

High Idle: Lambda: 0.67- not between 0.97 and 1.03 is a fail
    CO 11.89%- above 0.30% is a fail
    HC 1,779ppm- above 200ppm is a fail

What do you think i should do. i would appreciate any advice.:)

It depends on what the problem is. If it wasn't too expensive to fix, then it could be worth holding onto. But you should look into what the current market value for a 01 Focus is.

Do you know a trusted mechanic that can have a look into it for a reasonable fee? You don't want to end up spending big money just trying to find out the root cause of the problem.

You have a fairly major issue there, the exact problem would have to be diagnosed but I'd say you have a fairly major air/fuel ratio problem.

would that be an expensive issue? would i just be better of selling it and getting something else?

Its impossible to say without knowing what's causing it TBH.

Had something similar in the bmw - 2 new oxygen sensors and its perfect.

could be catalytic converter gone coupled with lambda sensor. if lambda doesnt work right, engine overfuelling, causing excessive unburned fuel go in exhaust system, and if drive for long time , catalytic converter burn out. could be air sensor gone or temp sensor only. shall bring to good garage for diagnostic, see what wrong with it.
Edit: your lambda is 0.67, which means no air goin in to system properly, so could be leaking air hose, dirty - never changed air filter or faulty air flow sensor.

You had the same readings as the OP?

A high reading of what though? Every reading, CO, HC, Lambda, points towards different problems. In a petrol car, bottles of potion will rarely have an effect and the readings are caused by faulty parts.

If your car was a diesel then its a different thing altogether.

Can't remember the proper readings it was 3 year ago and the only thing it failed on was high emission yes it was diesel brought it to WV dealers told me it was this and that and would cost nearly more than the car was worth itself.. so i bought it to a small time mechainc who pour the bottle of stuff into the tank brought it for a spin and told me to fill it up. a week later i bought it back for the retest after about 15 mins of trying, which i thought was gonna blow my engine the car passed.. when asked wat did i replace the cat or wat i say nothing just put stuff in tank.. Just wanted to share this it might help...

Diesels don't get an emissions test done, they get a smoke test and excess smoke is often caused by build up in the engine and exhaust system....which is what the bottles of diptane or similar can help with.

Its a completely different situation and cause/solution to a petrol engine.

OP when was it last serviced and was it done regularly. Am I the only one getting an image of a typical Irish driver having a car and no service done in 5 years then wondering why it fails so badly?

Not saying you are that type of person I just got that image cos I know so many people like that unfortunately.

In the case of the OP, as I said its a major A/F ratio issue. The exact readings(very high CO, low lambda and very high HC) point towards a misfire with unburned fuel being dumped into the exhaust.

The focus is prone to misfires with a couple of causes but with readings as far off as the OP posted, I would have said the car had to have a noticeable running issue.

I think that's what has me with the mental image of a typical ignorant Irish driver the most.

"ah shure tis grand for a runaround"

Seller will tell you everything to sell car. i wouldnt trust. Always after car purchase , have to do full complete service. ... which includes oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, gearbox oil, brake / clutch fluid change, waterpump and timing belt change (coolant also automatically) , rest of belts, if they look dogy . ... if you want keep car for long time 5 ish years.
