HTPC problem

    Hi,

Last year I built a HTPC, everything going great until last night.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056412739

My dear wife decided not to shut it down correctly and just powered off. She informed me this morning she always does this.

Before I went to work, I started it up this morning and only had a quick glance, the desktop wallpaper was just black, and most of the icons on the desktop are missing. It seems that a lot of programmes, downloads, settings etc are gone.

I don't have a clue what the problem is; I don't know if what my wife did had any effect.

    Any help much appreciated

Restart it again to make sure itm loaded the correct profile. What OS are you running?

Sounds like a temporary user profile. Windows loads a default profile with black wallpaper if it can't access your existing profile. First thing to try is a simple log off/log on and it might bring your original profile back.

If it doesn't, then you need to try copy the old profile to the new one which windows has created:

    Thanks for replying.

However, either I'm doing something wrong or unfortunately I need another solution.

I created two new User Accounts, however I could only see them in C:\Users\ after I had logged out and logged back in as the new account.

I selected all the files and folders except for Ntuser.dat
    I didn't have a Ntuser.dat.log, I had Ntuser.dat.log1 and Ntuser.dat.log2
    I didn't have Ntuser.ini at all.

When I copied and pasted over the files and folders and had to agree to overwrite the files and folders.

I logged out and logged back in as the new account but nothing different.

One thing I not sure of my old user name, if it was media or default user or public.

    Anyway still looking for help.

    Thanks,

Media doesn't sound like a generic profile windows creates, have you looked inside that? Also make sure to view hidden files & folders (hit Alt once in explorer>Tools>Folder options>view>Show hidden files & folders and apply). See if you see your documents, desktop, music etc.

I can see all hidden files and folders.

I can see documents, desktop, music etc folders in the "default" user account not in the media account.

However, when I look into media account and look in the folder "searches" it gives me saved search options "everywhere" and "indexed locations"

When I look in them I get huge list of everything I have done in that account (I think)

I would guess its likely I called the HTPC "media" when I was building it.

    Thanks for all your help

Below are the hidden files in the media account. Which ones of these should I not copy over to the new account?

    adb
    NTUSER.DAT
    ntuser.dat.LOG1
    ntuser.dat.LOG2
    NTUSER.DAT{016888bd-6c6f-11de-8d1d-001e0bcde3ec}.TM
    NTUSER.DAT{016888bd-6c6f-11de-8d1d-001e0bcde3ec}.TMContainer00000000000000000001
    NTUSER.DAT{016888bd-6c6f-11de-8d1d-001e0bcde3ec}.TMContainer00000000000000000002
    ntuser

    Thanks
