What's is the best way to remove all the carbon that has built up in the engine over time without taking in apart.

Diesel engine oil of the correct spec for a couple of thousand miles many folk reckon is less aggressive than an actual flush but just as effective.

It depends of what kind of carbon build up. If for example, the carbon build up is in the intake valves then the only way to remove it is by hand, removing the admission and cleaning them. This is a common problem on FSi engines, I had to do mine recently, thank god it was under warranty otherwise I would have been looking at a bill for over 2500 euro

Standard petrol engines (those without direct injection) inject the fuel through the intake valves - so an 'Italian tune-up' combined with a high quality fuel cleaner should be enough for a standard car.

You can now buy products that will remove the carbon in a direct injection petrol engine as well - they cost about €50 and you have to disconnect a bit of the inlet manifold to use them but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than stripping down the engine!

I know, but it only postpones it

Im waiting for a new product thats even better than the current ones but its the same thing, there isnt really a solution for FSi engines, it will happen sooner or later, using this products will help but in the end you will need to bring it to a mechanic to yhave the intake valves cleaned. Pain in the a..se

Newer FSi engines are better at dealing with carbon build up, my car lost over 100 hp because of it...
