Better 'quieter' PSU suggestions?

Hey all, just been looking about for whisper quiet PSU's that are reliable as well as of course Quiet. I have been using a XFX650w: Pro650w, which gets the job done but when running games like Skyrim and Star Wars: The Old Republic, it gets hot and very loud. It more than likely is the PSU as the Case hasn't a reason to get louder in terms of it's side fans but it could also be the back fan. Anyways, I'm looking for anything over 800w and under 100, a big stretch to have cheap, high wattage as well as a quiet build. Any suggestions are appreciated.

What's your setup at the moment? I highly doubt you need an 800W PSU.

And, how good is the air flow in the case. The XFX is very good PSU.

I've heard that the 650W version (at least the original XXX edition) got a bit noisy on high load. However, I think you should open up your case and have a look. The graphics card is usually the most likely culprit in making noise when running games like that.

    4GB DDR RAM
    1TB HDD
    1155 Socket by Asus
    Sapphire 6950 HD PCI-e
IN WIN Griffin case with the standard back fan and side fans, which make no sound at all.
    XFX 650w PSU

I put my ear up to my PC last night where the PSU is located, was pretty noisy at that spot, still unclear.

Pretty good, I have a side fan that's the side of the case that I have going as well as the back fan and front vents to vent out heat.

Yeah, that PSU will run 2x6950s, and shouldn't be getting loud for just a single one. I bet its the GPU that's making the noise. The Griffin is a pretty mediocre case for temperatures/airflow too.

Open catalyst control centre, and set the fan control to manual. Bump the fan speed up to 100% and see does it sound the same.

    Nope, doesn't sound the same.

That's weird, the PSU shouldn't be that loud. Its only running at a ~250-300W load. Anyway, something like the SuperFlower Golden Green would be what you want.

I agree, a half load PSU like that shouldn't be louder than a full load graphics card. I suspect a fault. Double check that it's not the CPU too. Run prime 95 or hyperpi to get the fan speed up quickly.

Maybe there's something sticking into the fan? A cable or excessive dust?

I've had it happen that a couple of strands of hair will get stuck in a fan. You'd be amazed at the amount of noise even that makes.

Best thing is when you have the case on, to stop all of the fans one by one, see which makes the biggest difference, then look at replacing whatever it is if you need to.
