Hey, I know theres a couple of threads about this topic already but cant really find a definitive answer for my query.

    Basically heres my query...

I recently got a car from a friend, it had been off the road from nov 2011. I have sent off the tax book to shannon for change of ownership and am awaiting it back.

What i need to know is do i have to wait for this to arrive before i go to the tax office or can i go in as i have the chassis number and other requirments filled out on Form RF100A?

Also, on the declaration of non use do i fill that out in the garda station or do i get the previous owner to sign it and declare how long it was off the road??

when you get the log book, the tax office will have it on their system that a change of ownership occured this month. then you are liable for the tax from this month onwards. just go in and explain, they can manually do it over the counter, but you have to wait until the changeover is complete as it may still show up in the previous owners name until your local motor tax office updates its system over night etc
