Apologies if this has been done to death before, but my two front tyres (99 Avensis, 14 inch wheels) are in a questionable state and I am planning to replace them both.

Given my driving history with this car I expect that the front tyres will take more of a hammering with driving than the back ones, which are still in pristine shape.

Question? Should I get the cheapest tyres I can, or go for a more expensive brand name. And if so, which brand is the best?

Buy the best tyres you can afford, avoid the cheap Chinese stuff as they have very poor grip especially in the wet. 14" tyres are not that expensive so you should be able to get a decent well known brand for reasonable money.

on my avensis i have dunlop tyres (cant remember the model, but some sort of sport ones) ....fantastic in any sort condition.
Good tyres would cost you 140 ish euro fitted (a pair) ,wouldnt suggest go for cheap chinese one, better than take used , but good name, it would cost around 70-80 fitted for both.

I'd imagin you will get a good brand like Bridgestone in 14" fitted for around €70 a corner. Kumho or Hankook are a bit cheaper but a good mid range tyre.

Put the new tires on the back and put the old rears on the front.

I recommend Uniroyal rainexperts, not too expensive but great in rain.
