    hi all

    Does anyone grow native orchids?

A contact in England is looking for seeds of or a plant of Dactylorhiza majalis ssp. occidentalis the Irish marsh orchid.

I take it your friend knows how to cultivate them. They are very hard to grow unless you know how to. The seeds are murder to germinate (they need the correct mycorrhizal fungi and conditions) and the plants of many Irish orchids die after flowering.

The National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin in Dublin did have a native orchid section but I have not been there in a while; dunno about Belfast?

I just checked the Dublin gardens and they have it listed as being in their collection

He grows his own from seed and is looking for this one. Glasnevin dont grow this orchid. Belfast Botanic gardens is rubbish compared to Dublin's

Would people like to see photos of my orchids?

I'll have one or both later this summer - what summer! - from a guy who grows them from seed on agar.

I hope you are a patient man; some of them take years to flower (and then just once for some of them). Mind you the Dactylorrhizas seem to be faster and some are even used in gardens. If you friend is indeed growing them this way, then he sounds like he knows what he is doing arlight so good luck with it. I meant to check my Irish flora last night for distribution in the wild.

Says it is widespread in the west of Ireland. It is possibly protected. Pics look fabulous if you google images.
