my only experience is quite the opposite, i bought a commercially taxed jeep, i decided to tax it as private, i rang my local co.council road tax office, who said once commercial always commercial, i will know more at the weekend when i go in to tax it.

Read this thread and best of luck - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056651048

Also isn't it illegal to sell on a UK registered vehicle her?

They were not right, I bought a Discovery that was initially passenger / private when sold new, then reclassified as a commercial for a number of years by the previous owner. When I changed ownership into my name, I changed the classification back to passenger - there was no duty owing as it originally had been a passenger / private.
