Window Sills

    Hi All, coming to the stage of our build (near slab) where i need to be thinking about windows and sills. I have been looking at these aluminium insulated sills and Im just wondering what you thoughts are. the windows will prob be black upvc. i like granite but they seem like they need a lot of maintenance and their appearance fades quickly especially with a green mossy look. Cant really find much info about the aluminium sills on the net, just seen for retrofitting, they advise removing concrete sills and replace with aluminium.

    where to start... black pvc windows and insulated alu cills..
    1. you haven't mentioned your wall build-up which would help in this discussion? i presume your taking about ground slab?
    2. nothing wrong with them, they are generally associated with EWI systems and the system supplier will have a preferred brand/profile type.
    3. before i offer an opinion, I'm wondering why you dont have a specification and detailed draing in place already?
    4. black upvc: are you concerned about warping in sun? does this mean you want to match the cills with the windows?
    5. you're worried about moss on granite, have you ever had a black car and tried to keep it clean? is it getting late in the day to solve thermal bridging?aluminium insulated may help in this regard
    6. this advice is relevant to existing cills that would covered by External wall insulation(EWI) and as easy solution alu or pvc cills are installed.
    • what has your architect got to say, and where are the drawings/details/spec?
    • what are you doing about air-tighness?
    • and thermal bridging?
    • IMO go with Alu-clad windows if black is your colour
