Passat Not Starting - Starter not engaging

    Hi All,

I have a 2006 Passat 1.9 Diesel. When I try to start it, I can hear a whirring noise, what I assume to be the starter motor running.

I guess that the starter is not engaging in the flywheel? I did notice that there was quite a large knock that almost rocked the car on starting in the last few weeks.

I was able to get it started with the help of a push.

Any ideas what's wrong? Any troubleshooting suggestions ?

    Thanks

Sounds very much like a starter alrite.

Sometimes they'll start with a tap of a hammer or bar as you try and start the car(helper required :) )

Reconditioned starters can cost between €60 - €90.

Not a major job to tak off and put back on either.

A gentle rap with a hammer can often free up a sticky starter, worth a try.

    Doh beaten to it
