Club league this week is a TT, would it be a bit silly to go buying clip ons at this stage? Would like to give em a go. Don't suppose someone would loan me a set?? Are they easy to whip on/off??

If you're in semi-limit, the answer is "no". ;)

Can someone post that chart of how much time each element of TTing gear saves you, please?

Think shoe covers was the biggest bang for buck

Clip ons are the best bang for buck I am pretty sure.

Cheers Lumen. Not really a TTer, but thinking of possibly investing with an eye to stage races. Won't be for another while yet, but have saved that table for future reference.

Thanks a million for everyone that offered loaners, very decent of ye all. I've just gotten sorted locally with a loaner set though. Must fit them now tomorrow and give them a lash for the laugh. :)

That's an interesting table. I remember someone telling me before that the helmet was particularly important, but not according to that it seems.

So..... who's going to loan their skin suit to fat bloke??

    (joking :D)

I have my doubts about the usefulness of that table.

For a start, getting hold of a Nike Swiftsuit is not exactly straightforward or cheap. If you can't find one used (mmm, used chamois) you're out of luck.

I spent a while searching for wind tunnel data on clothing a few weeks ago and came up empty. Just idle curiosity, I'm too crap for it to matter.

I see the frame comparison just compares TT frames of differing tubing. I'd be interested to see the difference between a road frame and a TT frame. Specifically a cheap TT frame and a good road frame.

If I were to buy a TT bike (I'm not) it would be a budget jobbie, and I'm often surprised at how relatively well priced entry level TT bikes are - aluminium frames of course. I'd imagine it's the same for a lot of club riders who do 99% of their riding and training on regular road bikes, but often very very high quality and expensive road bikes, and maybe have a cheap TT bike for the odd TT.

So in the case, where would you place your bets? The posh s-works road bike on zipps and clip-ons (or maybe just the drops), or a 1500 quid aluminium Felt TT jobbie on Felt branded "aero" wheels.

Whichever one you end up doing more training on.

Id say even a cheap TT bike would be faster than a top road bike in most conditions. Most drag is caused by the riders body and its very hard to get low and far enough forward on a road geometry frame.

I actually have an s22,(admittedly with a pair of zipps :D) and find it noticibly faster than my road bike on the flat.

That was altogether too easy. Put the bike on the turbo, got kitted out, bolted the tri bars on, cleared my evening calendar in anticipation of a long night of adjusting and spannering and tweaking and googling and cursing...

Sat up on the bike, hands on the bars, elbows on the pads..... seems grand, pedaled away for a bit... poifect! Very little appreciable difference to being down on the drops. Back a little bit flatter alright, and elbows are tucked in of course. Surprised by the comfort though, and I didn't have to adjust my saddle from level, which will no doubt keep the UCI off my case :)

Hopefully tri them(see what I did there) on the road tomorrow.

That easy? Might see how I go on Thursday in the drops, then compare with aero bars in the future.

I've found the advantage of the aerobars is that you can lean on them as opposed to supporting yourself on the drops.
Mind you, I bought aerobars after last year's 10mile tt and only used them in earnest for the 25.

I bought a cheap pair yesterday and went for a long spin with them. Surprisingly comfortable, and better for my lower back than the drops. I'd be tempted to fit them for any long flattish solo spin. I'm not sure how aero I am, I'm not any lower than on the drops, but certainly narrower.

It's very straightforward until you start screwing with saddle position.

/me gives thread kiss of life

I'm looking to borrow, or possibly buy, a set of clip-ons ahead of the 25m TT in two weeks. Maybe someone has a set that they don't really use anymore?

I have the set that came with my Planet-X Stealth. They're basic but functional. I could bring them to the Sally Gap race next week or into work (D2).

My bike will more than likely be on ebay or in a van to France so you can borrow my profile t2 if you like?

D2 would suit, cheers Lumen. I'll drop you a PM.
