starting a new job with holiday booked

    Hi,

    Well at the end of doing two weeks work experience i was offered a job which i accepted. So I have to go tomorrow for an interview type thing where we sort out hours and the clock card and things.

    The problem I have now is that my mum has booked and paid for a 5 day holiday for the start of August weeks ago, I will let the manager know tomorrow but i was wondering if he will let me take the time off ( i will explain that i will take the 5 days unpaid )

    Well, unless your manager is on boards and sees this thread I think the only way to get an answer is to ask at your interview.

    You might get paid. 6 months left in the year with 1.5 days off per month. Depends on what is required for Christmas. It probably wont be a big issue TBH. Everyone has to take holidays and its a short break.

    Yes but to take holidays you don't always have to have the time worked in advance. If for instance somebody was taking their two weeks holidays in May then they would not have had the time worked up that year. It would be presumed that they where going to be there for the rest of the year. If they left earlier then it would be deducted from their final wage packet.

    He is starting in June/July. He/she will have enough days for some holidays as well as Christmas. Later in the year it would be a different story. The employer might prefer to pay them for it now then have them take more time off paid at a later date.

    Bit cheeky to go looking for holidays the day your hired.Won't go down well i'm sure.Think of it from the employers viewpoint, I'd be well pissed.

    When you do the interview your employer should ask if you have any holidays booked. Just tell him then. Don't mention anything about paid or unpaid, he probably wont ask anyways.

    Mention it at the Interview & as the other person said don't mention pay. Dont worry about it, you will be able to take the week off. If he refuses or complains about it, you are better off not taking the job anyway.

    Your employers not going to ask you have you got holidays booked? for crying out loud, they want you to do a job.Take the job. Forget the holidays.Be grateful for it.

    it is a fairly standard question i have been asked before,
    kneemos is living in cuckoo land, the recession is not a reason for an employer to give you no holidays:rolleyes:

    When I was offered a job recently I explained that I had two weeks holidays booked in September. These would have been my summer holidays, agreed with my previous employer. I made sure to mention them at the interview, and mention it again when I signed the contract and there was absolutely no problem with it.

    Be upfront and tell them, or just decide not to go. Whatever you do, don't take the job and then ask for this in a month or whatever, and don't pull a convenient 5 day sickie.

    This question came up before in an interview skills course I attended last year(I since got a job and was promoted to manager). The answer we got at the course was logical - coming up to summer months most employers would half expect new staff to have some sort of holiday arrangments made for at least a few days if not a week or two. We told to be honest on this matter.

    Mention it as part of the interview. It should actually be a standard question on the part of the employer when hiring.

    An employed individual is entitled to annual leave, as long as their employer agrees to it.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with walking into an interview with holidays booked. All you can do is be upfront & honest.

    It's a question you might get asked out of curtesy,I would'nt say yeah I want a week off next month. Who mentioned not getting holidays. At least make sense.

    Thankfully we don't all work for you:) you should move to china or north korea it be more suited to your requirements. The op is given the employer over a month and a half notice . Plenty of notice .


    Op tell your new employer you had hols booked before work experience. No good employer will argue with you over 5 days. He/ she will say yes and you ll appreciate it.

    You get the job because the employer requires a certain skill set and you are in his/her eyes the best available candidate.

    Well said Michael. If an employer is rigid, the employee is rigid right back ive seen both very rigid and very flexible employers. The flexible boss knew he d get more from us. I know which one that made the most money.

    Not wanting to sound smart but , People like you get laid off the same as everyone else no matter how conscientious you are . Everyone takes hols it's factored in.

    Bed time :) just to say no matter how conscientious you are in a job It shows no favours if a boss decides you are a surplus to his/her requirements and you sure as hell may not get a month and a halfs notice either like what op is given them for hols . Night

    By the way op despite what previous Posters have said it's ok to talk about wages if your been offered a job. Obligatory I would have thought.

    They might give it paid if they want to get all holidays used up ASAP. Some companies don't like having 20 employees each with 20 days still to take at the end of the year.

    Well I had the interview today and he asked if i had any holidays booked and i told him the date's and he said no problem :D
    Cant wait to start on Monday
