Due to an unexpected refusal of my leave application for September, my friend and I are forced to go for a break in early August.

We would have gone to Crete in September, but August is not a good time for Greece, so we are now considering Majorca.

Can anyone recommend, or warn against, anywhere particularly good or bad in Majorca?

We want beaches, food and a dash of culture. We are not into discos, noise or yobs.

    All advice gratefully recieved.

we went and found it very expensive !
but we did like alcudia , we spent most our beach time on formentor , it was very chilled with a bar and restaurant and very pleasant swimming.
we spent a couple of afternoons in soller , its a lively fishing port with numerous tours etc , the train is a must.
great drive back over the mountains and some nice cafes along the way.
without the car we would of not liked it as much , the resorts were all very touristy.

if you like being 18-30, discos, drinking games and casual sex the Magaluf is for you.

if you like quiet restaurants all round a big square, and a much more laid back child friendly atmosphere then WAYYYY up north Puerto Pollensa.

the whole North West coast is quiet and relatively unspoiled.

Palma Cathedral & Castle are worth a day trip.

as are the Caves of Drach on the Eastern side.

    I LOVE Mallorca

Steer clear of Magaluf, I would say from memory.

Can I use the thread to ask a further question. I'm also considering a week in Majorca. Lately I've always booked direct over the internet but flights seem a little pricey.

Is there value in using a package deal? thinking last week in August .

Have been to Mallorca a number of times, stay away from magaluf and santa ponza it won't be your scene. Palma is very nice but the resteraunts near the harbour are crazy prices, met catherine zeta jones in one of them, Palma nova is nice as well, has a mixture of Irish English and Germany tourists but has a crowd of mainly 30-50 age bracket. The nova apartments are very family orientated but the hotel tropica playa in Palma nova can be booked directly and has very reasonable rates. My dad and his cycling club stay there every summer for a week and talk very highly of it. Hope that helps

Thanks everyone for these very useful tips. I am a complete Majorca novice and so all this info is extremely helpful.

Alcudia is nice and the beach is pretty to look at but smells awful, so I wouldn't go back for that reason (I'm a beach person!)

We're going to Mallorca next week. Any recommendations for a family with young kids? HidraPark any good?

    Posted this on another thread:

Yeah I liked Mallorca as well... I had never been on a "sun holiday" before and reluctantly went on my first one a couple of years ago to Mallorca. I would be more into adventure/doing stuff holidays...

Stayed in Santa Ponsa and I was getting seriously bored after a day or two of the beach, pool etc. Not a bad little town actually. It was nice, but needed something to do... so we hired a car and explored the island. Beautiful place...

Drove up to Soller and Port Soller one day via the west coast road. It was an absolutely stunning drive. Nice little villages and towns built into the side of the cliff/mountain with lovely winding roads (not for the faint hearted driver. Route was Santa Ponsa -> Andratx -> Banyalbufar -> Valdemossa (lovely little village) -> Dela -> Soller) (just took the motorway back)... I had been to Vietnam a few months previously and it reminded me a bit of that landscape up in the mountainous regions...

Another day we drove into Palma itself and it is a really nice city. Drove via Magaluf on the way. It was a right kip. KFC and vomit the place smelled of...

The best place though was a little beach called Cala Marcal, right beside Portocolom on the east side of the island. Just north of Cala D'or... Absolutely stunning. Perfectly fine sand, crystal blue water, perfect for swimming in and a lovely place with nice restaurants. It seemed to be mainly Germans that it catered for, but we are thinking of heading back there if we can for a short break..

Can I suggest Menorca, or on an even quieter vibe; Formentera? The latter is esp. beautiful and easily explored by bike or scooter. The only (minor) downside is you have to fly to Ibiza, get down to harbour (10/15 mins by taxi) and get the ferry (30/50 mins). But it's so chilled and welcoming, if you need space and all that.
