I started a level 8 nursing course but left in feb of the first year (feb '07). I am hoping to do a different higher certificate course in another college and want to know would I be classed as a second chance student? Or would I have to do another level 8? Are there any fees payable at all?

I think you'll have to pay fees for the entire of first year as you dropped out in February, but for any years after that you wouldn't have to pay your fees.

Second chance students have to be out of education for 7 years afaik!

Second chance students have to be out of education for 5 years afaik!

Avox is correct but changed the above where it's 5 years out education before you can become eligible for Second Chance student fee's.

Ah sorry I thought it was 7! If it's 5, she should qualify as a second chance student so

No no you will be able to claim fee's for the first year again as a second chance. I was saying he was correct in his first point but the years out of education for second chance students is 5 and not 7. Which you should be ok to be qualified as second chance student.

you'll be able to get your free fee's back in full. But you will probably need to provide a letter to the new college stating that you had previously studied and how long you studied. You will need to contact your old college for this.

Also when you say 'higher cert', do you mean a course below a level 8?

Only level 7's and Level 8's (usually Ordinary and Honours Undergraduate Degree courses) fall under the free fee's. If it's a 1 year or 2 year course it won't fall under this and you will have to pay any fees (although AFAIK you can get a grant). Also the free fees do not fall under every college or university, some colleges are private in which you cannot avail the free fees.

Check here for more information on this and the Appendix Two section for more on the third-level institutes that facilitate free fee's

It's actually a level 7 course not a higher cert as I thought....If I started a level 8 will I still be able to go back to study at level 7 instead? That's the bit I'm very confused about.

Depends on the course? Is the level 7 a nursing course? If so you might be able to transfer into it. If it's a completely seperate course then Id say you will have to pay fees for your first year, unless you wish to wait 5 years until you qualify as a Second Chance student to claim free fees from Year 1 Onwards again?
