Problem with Samsung PS-50C96HDX

    Hi there,

A friend of mine has a Samsung PS-50C96HDX. The audio and video has stopped working and the LED on the front panel flashes on and off 4 times. He said he checked the voltage and it's fine. He now suspects the firmware needs to be updated but can't seem to find a new version. This tv has RS-232. If anybody has experienced this problem and could tell me what it is or point me in the right direction of where to get the firmware.

    Thanks.

Thats the infamous Samsung capacitor problem , some capacitors on the PSU board will be bulging or burst , and these need to be replaced.

If you are any good with electronics and soldering , then you can get the parts from maplins and do it yourself for less than 20 euros.

Otherwise , see if you can find someone qualified to do it , but expect to pay maybe 3 to four times as much.

    Thanks very much, very helpful.

This friend of mine you see, is from Italy so his English is not very good. I showed him what you posted using google translate. He said he resolved that problem and communication with the PC is fine, that it definitely is a firmware problem. He says, "I try to terminate during boot with the symbol ~ because I read on some forums that you can get a firmware but then shows "DTV" and nothing happens by pressing any key ...".

I'm guessing a firmware update is needed but the firmware seems to be unobtainable for this model. Can anybody source it or point me in the direction of where to find it?

It not very clear what's going on here from the posts. The first suggests the tv simply won't switch on but it now looks like an attempt is being made to remotely control the set via the rs232 command set?

That being the case there is quite a few possibilities.

What software is being used to send the commands?
If its hyper terminal then you should know that that is notorious for sending the wrong hex commands based on how it's set up.

Does your friend have a list of the correct hex codes for the set.
How are they being sent and via what software?
How does he know what commands are actually on the line? Does he have an rs232 analyser?

Latest firmwares nearly always address more subtle issues than rs232 control, which is simple enough to be correct from the start on most sets that have that capability.

Most likely is that the controlling device is not sending the command in the correct format in the first place.
