I am working as an intern in one company at the mo in a department relevant to my qualifications (Supply Chain) Two weeks ago the other intern from a different dept got work with another company and so has left. Now that he is gone, they are throwing some of the work he was doing my way! This work is not what was on the job spec! Now, I hate being thrown around when I don’t know if I will get something out of it! (Ie: a job)

    What would you do???

I would complain. Ring jobbridge first of all and speak to someone and see what advice they give you. Then talk to your boss saying your being taken advantage of. Your doing the work of two people and your not even getting paid. Don't be silent and miserable. Complain, things cant get much worse, especially if you don't think you will be kept on. It will show your company you are not a pushover

    Hope it all works out

I don't really agree with the above advice.

I think you should have a friendly, calm chat with your manager about the current situation. Tell her you are happy to be kept busy but you are wondering if the new tasks are temporary or permanent. If she says they are permanent you should tell her you are not too interested in gaining irrelevant experience and would it be possible to assign the new tasks to someone in the relevant department...

But I reckon your manager will say it is temporary...

How did this work out for you?

I was an intern on job bridge and went above and beyond the call of duty... result i got a job!!

I guess it all depends on the work. IMO if it is in any way relevant you should do it, if not maybe a chat is required..

    Hi neaideabh,

Personally I wouldn't complain about this. The fact that your employer is giving you the extra work is more than likely a good sign. They wouldn't give you it if they didn't think you could do it and that's never a bad thing.
You should be looking for as much work as possible to try and prove yourself to the employer anyway.
I would suggest you just do the work because all it can do is increase your prospects of getting a full time job out of it.
Hope this was of some help to you :)

i undertand what the above poster is saying, but it doesnt guarantee you will get a job at the end of it,the likelyhood is that they will wait to get more free labour staff as its cost effective, remember they have job recruit freezes in a lot of places and were still in a recession, althought there are some recession proof companies taking the piss,a lot of cashed up companeis using free labour when they can afford to hire..jobbridge is a bit of a job blocker,as it steals what could be a paid job out of the community, for example a company signs up with jobbridge for free staff as oppsed to looking for paid staff..

but, what i would do?is speak to the jobbridge co ordinator, and the company that is involved maybe someone in a more senior position,if it gets too bad ring hr of the company and demand to speak to them, demand a meeting with them without the problem employer that is throwing all the work your way..

you could apply for a transfer to a different company under jobbridge..

Do the work, ask questions when you hit something you don't know how to handle, learn, add it to the skill-set on your CV.
