If you are caught driving unaccompanied with a learners permit this appears to be the punishment:

    1st Offence – A fine not exceeding €1,000

    2nd Offence – A fine not exceeding €2,000

3rd or subsequent – A fine not exceeding €2,000 and / or 3 months imprisonment

    no penalty points.

Are you aware of anyone who had gone to jail just for driving unaccompanied?

There are plenty of people who drove unaccompanied on a learners permit who are no longer with us.

That's a lot worse than going to prison or a fine

Yep, and there are plenty of people who were just walking down the road minding their own business, and fully qualified drivers who are no longer with us, because of learners driving unaccompanied and causing crashes. Killing someone. What a lovely thing to have on your conscience.

Ah sure what's the harm? T'will be grand. The Guards will do shag all if they stop you. And so on and so on. It could be our national anthem.
