Bar the BMW, i'm struggling to think of one. Surely there must be someone still doing them? AFAIK the (current) IS250 has a V6.

They are a sad loss. As a kid in 1975 I remember revving my grandfathers BMW 2500 (while parked!), turbine smooth, the sound was intoxicating and set me up for a lifetime of car nonsense.

    Volvo have straight 6 engines - the T6 3.2 and 3.0

Wasn't the 320 petrol engine and possibly diesel in the earlier Mercs a straight six?

The BMW 320 was a straight six in the E30 and E46, it was a four cylinder in the E90 and (I think) E21. Mercedes had straight six petrol and diesels until 15 or so years ago, the petrol straight six was replaced by a V6 in around 1997. I think the diesel may have lasted longer.

Last merc to have an inline 6 was the w140 s class (princess di type) 2.8 and 3.2
    They ran till 1999

AMG did a straight 6 3.6 in the w210 but no idea when they stopped doing them, the w210 stopped in 02

Are there many advantages of an I6 over a V6.

I hear V6s can be hard to balance from a resonance point of view ? Balancing load on the crankshaft etc ?

Yep the 320i from '05 on in the E90 was a four cylinder. I thought that the Mercedes S-Class from 1999 to 2005 had a straight six petrol up until 2002?

I think it was replaced in different cars at different times, but i'm almost certain the W220 got the V6 from the start - ie 1999.

The F10/F30 528i/328i are all 4 cylinder turbo units so it looks like BMW are gradually moving away from 6 cylinder petrol engines.

    BMW 1M is a straight 6.

Unfortunately:mad:! As mass market cars go, nothing comes even close to the sound of a BMW straight 6 petrol engine, although their straight six diesels sound pretty good inside as well!

The Lexus IS200 sounds great as well when it's revved.

Apparently Merc are seriously considering going back to straight six engines - see here:)!

The forthcoming F30 M3 is back to a straight six as well :D!

I always loved the sound of a straight 6, petrol or diesel.

Great stuff, I guess the vees are lower and shorter, but they are a lot harder to balance.
From dynamics classes (oops cant remember the equations) , our lecturer showed us how 3 cylinder engines produced one type of "out of balance" force, this could be resolved by adding another 3 cylinders, hence a 6 cyl gives near zero vibrations without the addition of balance shafts.

There was one more offering in recent years that was never going to sell in numbers but died a horrible death at a young age with the co2 tax regime. The only thing of note was a transverse mounted I6, I'm not sure any other car sold here ever featured one. Who's going to guess what it is?

edit, these must be transverse too but not what I'm thinking of

Flat 6 is better than inline 6 though...
    Lower CoG = better handling!

My skylines sound was just proper boner material. I know everyone love BMW l6, but for me it was always a skyline l6!

I can see you were all intrigued :D

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, the Chevrolet Epica, which had a bespoke I6 developed especially for it, I hope somebody appreciates the engine, there's not much else to appreciate. I had a rare sighting of one of these this morning too .

I actually was, I just didn't really have anything to say!

I6 six is a reliable design, almost the best in engine balance terms. I suspect the reasons behind the decreasing numbers of I6 engines are cost and weight reduction.
    Sadly...

Toyota supra, lovely smooth engine, had one, loved it.
