a toolkit that has the following.
    • Square Taper BB tool
    • Shimano Hollowtech cup removal tool
    • Shimano cassette removal tool
I have most/all other tools that I ever require, but will need the above shortly.

If not a 'kit' I'm happy to go with individual purchases as long as they dont break the (piggy)bank.

    TIA

If you have most of the basics - A decent set of metric allen keys and a socket set + screwdrivers, I would buy the tools you need rather then the kits which can often contain stuff you already have - allen keys etc..

I like Cyclo Pro tools. Chain Reaction Cycles have a decent range of them.

    Square Taper BB tool?

The older style cup+cone? Or the splined Shimano BBs?

You will need a crank extractor to get the pedals off too....

No I didn't . This is what happens when I miss my morning coffee. :o

Insert "crank" where "pedals" are mentioned. :D

    Yeah, I understand.
I guess there's little to choose between the main brands?

I've never noticed too much difference. I would be in the home environment (though I'd be flipping a few bikes for resale every now and then....) so they would be getting a enough use but nothing like intensive shop use.

As I said I like Cyclo Pro tools. Park and VAR have and excellent reputation too, thought they can be expensive for what they are.

Realising that I'm also not going to get away without a chain whip, I'm beginning to think that a 'kit' is the way to go - even it it duplicates various ring spanners and allen keys, and crappy chain-breaker that I could do with replacing. This one looks good value:

Ice Toolz Essence Tool Kit for Home Mechanics - High quality tools in strong portable case. - Includes: ISIS/ Shimano BB tool, 8 Groove spoke wrench, Cassette tool, Crank puller, Chain tool, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6mm hex key set, 6" Adjustable wrench, 8mm Hex key, 8 & 10mm open ended spanner, 2 x Flat head screw drivers, 2 x Cross head screw drivers, ½" drive adaptor, Hollowtech 2/ MegaExo adaptor, Chain Whip, Pedal & box wrench, and Nylon tyre lever set.

any opinions? Ideally, I'd get cone spanners in a kit too...... (the underlined bits would be of use to me....)

Yeah, I should have pointed out earlier that Merlin have the Icetoolz one at £30 (still no cone spanners, though). I was always comparing these to the X-Tools one at CRC but thought that a bit expensive in comparison.

Merlin also have a Bike Hand toolkit at around £50, and its available online for less (here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-Hand-Shimano-Bike-Cycle-Maintenance-Repair-Tool-Kit-/300621618429?pt=UK_Spots_Leisure_Cycling_Tools_RepairKits&hash=item45fe71dcfd) but it seems virtually identical to the X-Tools one and with shipping etc, it will work out at virtually the same price (€53 delivered). Funds are tight, bu given that I have an existing account at CRC I seem to have come full circle ............ as is often the case.

@BX19, Thanks for persisting with my queries !!!
