Putting the car in neutral when stopped

I've been driving with my mam (argh!) and she insists that every time I'm stopped at traffic lights or in traffic I should have the handbrake up and be in neutral.
I do this when I think I'll be stopped for a while but sometimes I'll just have the handbrake up and be waiting in 1st gear, ready to go...

Can some one please tell me which method I should get into the habit of using in order to pass my test?!

Only throw the car into neutral if you happen to be waiting at Traffic lights.

It's quite uncomfortable constantly keeping the clutch down when you leave it in gear. Other than that, it's entirely up to your own preference.

For the driving test my instructor told me that if you are the first or second car that you should be in 1st gear. If you are further behind you can be in neutral.

This is the logic that I'm going with, hopefully my mam will believe me now :)
