No p45 or reference

I moved to Ireland in 09 and worked casually for two years as a babysitter. I lost my job in Sept last year when they family moved abroad. They left me a written reference and phone number to contact them but I seem to have lost them.

My problem is my job search has thrown up two interviews over the next few weeks but I have no one to put down as a reference and have no p45. When living in Wales I was self employed for three years before I moved here.

How do I explain this to prospective employers? For all they know I could have been doing nothing for the first two years of living here. Will this hold me back from getting work?

P45 is irrelevant as you have not worked this year.

I am sure you can track down the family. Do you know what country they have gone to? You could ring the embassy in that country and ask them to pass on a message...

I would imagine if you phone an embassy and ask them to do this they will politely tell you where to go. They are there for consular issues, not to act as a message minder.

Are there any other people who could act as a reference for you? Even as a personal one? You mention you were self employed before moving here - what about one of your clients or suppliers providing a recommendation. Ok, so they can't say what you are like as an employee but they can testify to how they found you to work with.

Lots of people can't follow up on references - many companies have shut down, so its not possible to track previous line managers etc. so you are not alone with this problem and it is not as harshly viewed as it once might have been. Having said this, any reference is better than no reference. So perhaps go down the route of asking people you interacted with when you were self-employed.

Anyway (and I'm sorry to sound harsh), a reference for when you were babysitting might not be much use anyway unless you are looking for a job in child care. A solid recommendation from a previous client or supplier would probably be much more useful.
