Question About PLC courses?

I want to do English and History in U.L. but I think since the Irish oral is now worth 40%, it's seriously putting pressure on me to do two great Irish papers to bring up my marks. I do OL and it's my worst subject and I don't feel I'm going to pass. I don't do the extra language so I need a pass in Irish.

I really don't want to have to go back to school to repeat the leaving. I've been miserable at school for years and I don't think I can handle another year of it. Is there any other way I can go about getting into uni (plc courses or whatever)? I think with the 40% going for the oral, I wouldn't even pass if I repeated next year...

Another thing, can you get grants for plc courses or anything like that?

I'm just looking for other options in case I fail...thanks in advance for any answers.

Usually for arts courses you can do a PLC in either Liberal Arts, Heritage and Culture (can't quite remember the name of that one), European Studies and a Language and there is one more I just can't think of. Check the UL website and it will say what PLC your course accepts.

You can get grants for PLCs, I'd advise you have a look at studentfinance.ie or pay a visit to your local VEC for advise on them.

And lastly, don't fret! I myself am relying on a poor oral (when the examiner asked my why I liked Titantic I said "Ugh, the ship broke. People went under water. They all died. I liked the Titanic because Leonado Decaprio was sexy." all as Gaeilge, of course :pac: ) and two poor papers to get me a pass!

    Good luck OP. :)

PLC is a good way of boosting your points for University, but as Fizzyorange has said, you need to do some homework and make sure your PLC will tie up with and be acceptable to the course you want to do.

PLC courses are a good follow up to school, especially for people who struggled with school, its a different atmosphere. You need to be working towards Distinctions right from the start, its not a very long year and you have to hit the ground running, but if you go in with that attitude you can do very well.

Dreadfully sorry to inform you but in UL these are the only courses you can enter from a FETAC course.

I'm sorry about that, and really hope you pass Irish!
