Refurbish cast iron fireplace

    How to refurbish ?

It is black / charcoal in colour i e. has that cast appearance. To be clear it has not been painted with say a gloss.

So far I have sanded down stains and rust marks. This exposes a silvery finish in parts.

The trim closest to the fireplaces ranges in colour from black to red(rust?) to white at the grate (from heat? )

Next steps ? I read mixed reports on the web on priming/ grate polish etc

    Thanks
