Looks like this years breeding attempt will be a total failure:(
Not so, as Niall said in the blog
All is not lost however! It is still early days yet. Little Terns which lose their eggs before hatching can re-lay once the loss occurs before mid-June.

Lets see how this pans out before declaring a total failure

Sad news indeed and not unexpected. It's such a narrow strip of beach that any bad weather is very dangerous. I was also disturbed but not surprised to hear of the nest outside the fence that had been walked on - every man (and woman) and their dog are all over the beach in recent years and the place needs a more permanent reserve type regime. :(

Maybe I'm being a little pessimisitic but I can't see how productivity this year will avoid a a large dent at the very least - looking at the forecast for the end of the week would suggest we're not out of the woods weatherwise eitheir for a similiar type event:(

Unfortunatly it looks like the Kilcoole colony is set to be lashed by another potentially destructive bout of wind and rain from late tommorow, lasting till Saturday:(

A little bit of good news, until then - 16 nests active again.

It wasn't the rain that did it; it was the Spring tide and strong East wind.
    Fingers crossed all round.

Judging from the blog here http://littleternconservation.blogspot.ie/ the second breeding attempt has also been a complete failure and it looks like there will be no young Little Terns raised at Kilcoole this year. They appear to be having problems at the Baltray Little Tern colony in County Louth too http://www.louthnaturetrust.org/blog_2012_little_terns but the colony here is hanging on by the skin of its teeth. The Louth Nature Trust are also finding it difficult to maintain wardening schedules. Personally, I find them poor at communicating and I wonder if they liaise with Birdwatch Ireland and the Kilcoole project - they don't even have Birdwatch ireland on their Links list http://www.louthnaturetrust.org/links___related_sites :(
