Importing Car from the UK?

    Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone could advise me here. I am thinking of buying a car in London next month before the Olympics and bringing it back to Ireland. I did this before in 2006 but I understand that the whole system has now changed with the NCT centre taking over the whole VRT operation since then.

Back in 2006 I brought the car in London, rang the Irish insurance and changed the Insurance onto it so I was insured in the UK to drive it. I brought it over on the old Cork-Swansea ferry and paid the VRT two months later as I had to wait for a certificate of Permanent Export to arrive as I accidentally posted away the English logbook to the DVLA which was not the correct procedure for a car going for export, I filled in the English change of ownership as if I was a person residing in the UK.

The MOT was also valid for 6 months so I did not NCT the car until that expired as otherwise I'd have had to NCT the car on its anniversary date paying the NCT twice within the year.

I just want to know what is the procedure now? Buy and bring in the car with the proper paperwork? How long do I then have to pay the VRT? I expect to have a VRT bill of around €2k on the car I'm after going by ros.ie, the car will be 3 to 4 years so I also need to know what is "extras" and how are they calculated.

Back in 2006 the car I imported was fully loaded with leather and everything compared to a similar poverty specc'd Irish version but the car was 8 years old.

I've heard that cars older than 5 years old are not checked for "extras" and I want to be 100% sure of what the VRT quotation is before buying and importing the car and don't want any nasty surprises, I will be importing a 2008 model or 2009 if the money is right to avail of the lower Co2 rates of VRT and Motor tax.

I have no problems in the UK and know about HPI and all that also, last time I bought the car in the UK I paid by Credit Card and this cost me over €100 in the foreign exchange fees charged on the credit card so was wondering what other options are available other than Cash. My budget is €10k, €2k for VRT, €7.5k for the car and the cost of the ferry and flight over, i'll be staying with relatives so that will allow me to take a few days to find the right motor also.

Your help or advice is appreciated.
