Looking for a sub 2000 Euro small automatic for a friend. He asked my opinion about 2000-2001 polo 1.4 autos as they fit budget.

I have driven manual version of it couple of times. It wasn't bad to drive.

Owner regularly had to clean throttle body otherwise it was cutting out on stop start traffic.

I also remember I have read automatics are quite thirsty.

So any good or bads about these ? I may go and check one tomorrow so it would be great if you can point common issues to check !

    Thanks

Had pretty much the same car except mine was a 2003, very thirsty is what i'd say. But otherwise it was grand enough. Asides from being an auto it didn't have all that much going for it.

I got my Mother one. She has it 5 years now, and apart from spitting out a 20 Euro water temp sensor once every two years, it hasn't missed a beat.

Just bought my father one, UK spec (alloys, air con and leccy windows!) but needing a bit of work. Drives well but will haven't had time to put it up on the lift yet to sort a rumbling rear bearing and a bit of a misfire. Got very cheap but has lots of early history so hopefully will get a couple of years out of it

Just to add to my previous comment. I never had an ounce of trouble with it in the 2 years of driving it. (Still actually have it, but it's going to me mammy)
