I think the hard drive in my laptop is failing. It makes a loud clicking noise from time to time and the laptop won't boot occasionally. What is the best way to make a backup of windows vista so that I can perform a clean install on a new hard drive? I don't have a CD with windows vista on it.

I would be more concerned about your information than Vista tbh.. if you have the sticker on the side of the box, you will be probably be able to get a CD that will work with that code easily enough... that is, if you would WANT to reinstall Vista... XP or Windows 7 are far better operating systems and now might be a good option to change...

What is the make and model of the PC, and what restore option did it come with.... i.e. restore partition, restore CDs ??

Get some disk imageing software and make a complete image (including the hidden recovery partition) of the drive to a new drive equal to or bigger in size.
You can use something like Acronis.
Or there may be an option in the manafacturuers folder in "All Programs" that will create recovery discs. Make sure you back up all your files before hand on an external drive or DVD's. Any software installed extra on the PC will be erased and will need to be re-installed. Make sure you have a copy of any keys for these programs.
