Cross-member corrosion

    Hi,

My old 1997 Renault Megane did not pass the NCT for corrosion. I really don't want to buy a newer car yet, I would like to try to resurrect it first if possible as the corrosion isn't as bad as it sounds.

The corrosion is on the rear cross-member where it is welded to the offside chassis leg. The chassis leg is in a relatively good shape, it's the cross-member which should be replaced. I am looking for someone who can lift the car and check its under-body, and have a look and tell if it's worth fixing.

It's an old 1997 Renault Megane Classis, 1.6 petrol. Can you recommend some good car mechanic in Dublin, do you know what the cost for fixing would be?

    Thanks!

hi did you have a look under the car yourself yet.

i do corrosion repairs. it all depends on who much you want to pay. ???

and also it might look good untill you hit it with a hammer. i am doing a 1987 bluebird at the minute and its very bad around the back.

it could roughly cost €150 - €200. aprox depending. try and get a photo and put it up.

    could I ask your expertise.
would a cross member that has corrosion fail an NCT?

    Hi rameire,

I am not an expert to judge, but I would say the cross member corrosion does not necessary need to fail NCT if it's in early stage and small. Mine was apparent and extensive and despite the fact all other tests passed, the NCT failed due to "car body corrosion".

Sorry if this is not of much help for you. Good luck with your NCT. :-)

    Regards,
    Oskar
