I inquired at the motoring school I have been getting most lessons in how much it was to rent the car for the driving test. It is 150 for that, including pre-test. That seems a bit high, compared to typical prices for lessons. I'm in Limerick, and doing my test in Castlemungret. Is this price ok or should I look at other places..?

Prices to use a driving schools car for the test are often more then basic lesson prices. But to be honest that seems quite high and I am a driving instructor in Dublin ( Where stuff generally cost more ). You have to ask yourself do you really need to use their car? Are the pretest lessons from the instructor really worth it?
That said, if you have got most of your lessons from them, ask for a discount.

    My normal charge is €100.
From my side this involves washing, hoovering and dusting the car. Collect client. Client drives to test centre, allow 30 mins.
1 hour plus pre-test lesson. Back to test centre say 20 mins. before test time. 40-45 mins client on test. 5 minute debrief after test. Drive client home again, 30mins.
All in all for me its at least half a day. Throw in the cost of fuel and insurance and I don't think that price is unreasonable.

I go to the driving school to get lessons, so they wouldn't be collecting me. I dont think they would do any extra cleaning for it. The school is not far from the test centre also. So it's a different context really.

I heard that an independent instructor charged my friend €50 to use the car for the test, which is a big difference. I think I'll tell them this, and ask them if they will reduce the price, as I'd prefer to use the same car I've used the most etc.

It's not completely different - you also have to consider the fact that if you are using the driving instructor's car to do your test, that's 2 or so hours that he cannot use the car for other lessons, so some of the high charge may be attributed to foregone income

Our excess is higher when the car is being driven by the pupil. A tester generally won't use the dual controls unless there's danger of a serious accident. It's a factor to be considered when setting the price. The car is used for around 2 hours
