Want to go for a cycle with the girlfriend to get some use out of the bikes we bought but never used.

She is nervous about cycling on or near roads and the bikes we have are cross country style ( front susspension only mtb).

Can anyone recommend a route in or around Dublin / wicklow area thats not too long and away from roads?

If she is nervous about cycling, I'd suggest the phoenix park until she builds her confidence a bit.

There are trails in Ticknock/Ballinastoe, but there can be some very fast riders on them that catch up on you like a freight train. I'd be worried the experience would put her off when she is only starting out.

There's a decent cycle path along Clontarf to Bull Island that's off the road if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. It goes on further to Sutton but there's a section where you have to cycle on the road for less than 2km and then it starts again.

As mentioned, there are a couple of trails around the Phoenix park, in particular around the Magazine fort...

If you want something more challenging, then the lower loop at Ballinastoe is good...

However the Coillte trail around Ticknock is in bits around the top end, and the lower end is not worth going all the way out there for...
