Distribuor dust/moisture sheild, is it a vital component?

    I have a MK3 Golf 1.4

The black plastic, dust/moisture shield that sits around the rotor inside the distributor is a bit mashed and I'm having trouble getting the distributor cap to seat correctly.

Can anyone suggest where to get a new one (what exactly is it called??), or would I have problems if I was to just leave it off altogether?

    Thanks.
